A well-populated reef and a great dive site for those seeking a rich variety of marine life.
The Boonsung Wreck is located north of Khao Lak. It was an old tin ore processor that was deliberately sank in 1984. As the legend goes, this tin dredger went down in 20 meters of water, after somebody flushed the toilet and the water started rushing in and did not stop. Over several years, it became colonized by thousands upon thousands of fish, glad to be lucky enough to have to an artificial reef in a vast expanse of sand. When the tsunami hit in 2004, it broke the structure into four main pieces, making it even more interesting for the divers. Around the wreck, which locals describe as “fish soup,” you will pass through clouds of snappers, fusiliers, batfish, and trevally as you look for the special things living within the wreck and in the surrounding sand. Crocodile fish, batfish, trevallies, stonefish, scorpionfish, lionfish, ornate ghost pipefish and much more reside with the kings of the site, the nudibranchs. The dive site is suitable for all experience levels. The maximum depth of 18m makes the site ideal for open water divers and junior advanced open water divers. This is also a great diving day trip from Khao Lak for those who would like to spend less time transferring to the dive sites and more time on the beach. The best time to explore the dive site is between October and May.
