Daedalus reef scuba dive sites in Egypt

Enjoy drift dives along amazing deep walls covered by pristine hard and soft coral and unique dives with sharks. The reef is less than a mile wide but has become one of the best for scuba diving in the Red Sea.

This beautiful reef of the Red Sea is located 80km East of Marsa Alam and is a part of a Marine Park making it an undisturbed and healthy area to explore.
Thanks to these nutrient-rich waters, divers can expect to spot Giant Trevally, Manta Rays, Oceanic Whitetip Shark, Hammerhead Sharks, Grey Reef Sharks, and Tresher Shark. Sharks here can thrive undisturbed because the reef is fairly remote. Important to note, don’t swim towards the hammerheads, that may scare them away. Just sit perfectly in your group and that will attract them closer and closer.
It’s recommended to dive the eastern wall in the morning and the western wall in the afternoon. Both walls make drift dives to the southern point and are thickly overgrown with fans and soft corals but on the west side, you can expect a richer variety of marine life. A ledge at 10m is a home to schools of anemones, surgeonfish, clownfish, dottybacks, moray eels, wrasse, blue spine unicornfish, and groupers.
The south side offers excellent shelter from prevailing winds from the north and is the preferred mooring point for boats. Usually, the current is mild and divers can see some reef and thresher sharks chasing fish stocks.
The reef is for experienced divers because the currents get strong and the depths to explore are above those the OW allows. Also on the surface, the waters can get choppy. However, the incredible action below the surface will make you forget these difficult conditions once you get in the water. Divers need to pay attention to the depth, as watching the sharks can drop you down below your maximum depth.
The Daedalus reef has a lot to offer technical divers as well as steep drop-offs and the wreck of the Zealot at around 80 to 100 meters’ depth. Despite the presence of a small lighthouse in the center of the reef, built by the Egyptian navy in the 1980’s, the Zealot steamer hit the rocks and lies on the slope of the drop-off.
The best time to dive depends on what marine life divers are interested to find and explore. The whale shark season is from May to June. Hammerhead sharks and manta rays are also frequent visitors during this season. But there is plenty to see throughout the year.
