St John’s Reef is a huge reef of 21 km by 13 km lying below the Peninsula Berenice. To enjoy the area, divers should be comfortable with drift dives, as currents can be unpredictable and strong.
Reef fish life is abundant and the deep walls and brisk currents at some of the sites attract grey reef, hammerhead and thresher sharks, and other predator fish such as mackerel, barracuda and jacks.
Some of the best dive sites include:
Habili Ali – an oval-shaped submerged reef that is home to jacks and grey reef sharks, snappers, triggerfish, surgeonfish, bottlenose dolphins, manta rays, oceanic whitetip sharks, and more. The shallow reef flat is deep enough to allow you to drift slowly across admiring the underwater scenery as you complete your safety stop.
Gota Kebir – a massive reef with beautiful tunnels and caves, famous for its tunnels and south plateau, where jacks and barracudas can be seen and the occasional manta.
Cave Reef (Umm Khararim) – a system of connected tunnels of different lengths and widths with extraordinary coral landscapes where, rather than the fauna, the main attraction are the beautiful light effects you’ll see.
Abu Basala – one of the larger St. John’s reefs offering some more relaxing dives than other dive sites in the area. This sickle-shaped reef is unusual for the deep south Red Sea diving since it does not have steep walls. Instead, the reef edges offer mazes of columns, gullies, cracks, outcrops, balustrades and folds that run down the wall to the sandy bottom a mere 15-20m below.
It is possible to dive here throughout the year, but conditions are best during the summer months. Hammerhead sharks and bumphead parrotfish can be seen in summer months, and whale sharks can be seen during late spring and early summer.
