Apo Island is 12 hectares of a volcanic island surrounded by beautiful coral reefs. This small paradise island is a must dive site for every adventure seeker. Getting to the island might be challenging and resorts around the island aren’t very luxury, however, dive sites around the island are spectacular. This island is considered to be one of the 100 best dive sites in the world. Near the island is one of the most prominent marine sanctuaries in the world providing a home to 650 species of fish and 400 species of corals, including Brain Corals, Gorgonian Sea Fans, and Bubble Corals.
Currently, the Apo Island Marine Sanctuary and Protected Seascape is under rehabilitation and therefore is not accessible for divers. Nevertheless, there are over 12 different dive sites – calm and shallow and exciting drift dives at the Coconut Point.
A large part of the nutrition-rich reef is only 3 to 5 meters deep, making it an ideal place for snorkelers. Along the edges of the flat, shallow area, the reef drops off into a large wall, extending to over about 30 meters. The whole bottom is covered with corals and sponges of some kind, and the waters are full of large and small reef fish and lots of turtles.
There are different dive sites all around the island and depending on the season and place divers can expect to spot a large variety of aquatic life like schools of jacks, barracudas, white tip reef sharks, Vlaming Unicornfish, sponges, gorgonian sea fans, tuna, black and white snappers, giant trevally, Moorish idols, clownfish, emperor angelfish, various triggerfish and sea snakes, just to name a few.
Some of the most popular dive sites are Largahan, Baluarte, Katipanan, Rock Point West Kan-Uran, Rocka Point East – for beginners and those willing to refresh their skills. More advanced divers will enjoy dive sites like Mamsa Point, Gogon Point, Coconut Point, and Chapel.
