The Chumphon Archipelago is home to many of Thailand’s most popular tourist destinations, including the idyllic islands of Koh Tao and Koh Samui. The city of Chumphon is located right in the center of this province, and is a gateway to the archipelago of many islands. Chumphon is a door to the South of Thailand and a city with a long historical background.
This diving area is not so popular as many others in Thailand but only because it’s not discovered by so many divers yet. The area offers beautiful coral gardens, rock piles, caves and historical shipwreck like Prab Wreck. With around 50 islands to choose from, there is no limit to what you may find under the surface.
The marine life is very unspoiled and can thrive without mass tourism. This plankton rich area is home to barrel sponges, sea anemones, snapper, jacks, pufferfish, porcupine fish, moorish idols, butterfly fish, yellowtail barracuda, blue spotted stingrays and more.
Although divers won’t get as great visibility as it’s possible to get on the Andaman side, if dived at the right time of year, Chumphon can be extremely rewarding both to the novice and experienced diver. On a favorable day, the visibility can be 20 meters but at low tides it can be reduced to only 8 to 10 meters.
Some of the best dive sites include Koh Ngam Yai, Koh Ngam Noi, Hin Lak Ngam, and Koh Lak Ngam.
The best time to dive is from May to October.
